Ha Vay has cemented herself in the mystical, fantasy land of fun pop music with heavenly vocals and visuals that tell the story of her album “Baby I’m The Wolf” released last month.
I discovered her music after the release of her single “Moon Girl” last year, and its bewitching instrumentals and catchiness made me believe Ha Vay has a good future ahead in her journey. She will be opening for Sarah Kinsley on her US and Canada tour this year, and it seems like such a visionary event to attend.
BABY I’M THE WOLF - the album
It was surprisingly difficult to choose a top three but I have settled on:
Moon Girl — an instant classic on Ha Vay’s discography that every listener should gravitate towards while discovering her music. Beautiful and bewitching, so perfectly Ha Vay.
Pretty Baby — a surprising song in the record that I immediately fell for. It gives a different energy to the record as it is more haunting and slightly darker which is fun and gives diversity to her sound in a way I did not expect when approaching the record.
Nature’s Bride — a very unique sound that Ha Vay brings forward in this record, reminiscent of folk-pop with fantasy-like instrumentals. I would consider this another must-listen from Ha Vay’s discography so far, as it feels very representative of her aesthetic and sound, and it is just too catchy, you can’t miss it.
Honorable Mentions
Angel! Wild! Superstar! would get stuck in my head constantly when it first came out, and it sticks every time I listen to it. Another instant classic for Ha Vay.
Fragile is stunning and magical to listen to. The instrumentals are fun and explorative, which makes it engaging with a catchy chorus and nice strings.
Vampires almost made it into my top three as it blew me away the first time I listened to it. It feels floaty and heavenly. Her vocals come through in this song heavily as well.
He Wants the Rain is exciting, fun, and catchy. It perfectly ends the album.
The name of the record comes from the title track “Baby I’m The Wolf” holding the line: “You think you’ve caught a lamb, but baby, I’m the wolf.” It sets the central theme in the record underlining each track as well as showing the emphasis on imagery to explore this central idea.
The album sounds so distinct from what other artists are doing, making it refreshing for listeners and easy to gravitate towards. It is also easy to understand Ha Vay’s vision through the lens of her music videos and Instagram content (angeldreamgirl777) that showcases her storytelling and understanding of the narrative. It becomes an experience to watch the clips of the songs and the use of mystic elements in a musical context, in a way I had never seen before. Her vocals fully emphasize her aesthetic and bewitch you into absolutely adoring her record. I am definitely a fan, and excited to see what she does in the future.
Extra:
I heavily recommend her EP: “Avalanches and Unfamiliar Ways to Die” from 2023. It is too good. Especially, “Venus in the Sea.”
