At: New 4 albums 4 all tastes
new album releases that I am enjoying right now. Brief, and loving.
I am not trying to be pretentious by saying that 2024 is that year for music, but the albums that have been coming out this year are some defining moments for artists. It has been a great year for music and it is exciting to keep up with as culture continues to shift all over the place, and genres continue to blend.
Here are some of my latest favorites from these past few months (that I haven’t already covered before).
What’s Wrong With New York? by The Dare
genres: electroclash, dance-punk, new rave, electronic rock
I put off this album for a long time since I couldn’t let go of the Gorillaz and LCD Soundsystem comparisons. However, it grew on me. In two days, I was made a fan. It is insanely catchy and fun with a nostalgic club vibe that hasn’t been done well in some time now. “What’s Wrong With New York?” is a good debut album in the hyperpop sphere and will be one of the 2024 moments to look back to, especially through its connections to “brat.”
Good Time is an instant classic, alongside I Destroyed Disco (my two personal favorites). Girls cemented The Dare’s presence in the 2020s, and I can see Perfume becoming another staple in his discography in the future.
Elevation is one of the slower tracks, but worth noting. Movement might be another one of my personal favorites since it is so weird and experimental, which I appreciate. Definitely, a strong debut album that is setting The Dare in the almost-mainstream sphere.
Passion Depression by Cold Cave
genres: synthpop, post-punk
Though I have already covered this album on Instagram, it is just too good not to include. I absolutely love this summer goth vibe that Cold Cave experiments with, as it feels so authentic to who they are but refreshing in context with recent releases.
Blackberries, She Reigns Down, and Octavia had an immediate impact on the first listen, and they just captured me. Everlasting brings a change of pace into the summer vibe I referenced earlier, while Shadow Dance brings in a euphoric type of energy. Siren Song was the single for the album, and it is simply stunning. Cold Cave will forever be on my radar and I appreciate how consistent they have been through the years.
The Warping by Walt Disco
genres: Alternative/ indie, pop, rock
With only having listened to their singles from 2022, this album is as unexpected and intriguing as new releases come. It reminded me of David Bowie while listening to it, as well as Pulp, and (inevitably) I am obsessed. The dramatics and vocals give so much personality to the record, and accentuate the lyrics so well.
Gnomes, Come Undone, and You Make Me Feel So Dumb are some of my personal favorites from the album. The 70s influences just radiate off of these songs and it makes the album multifaceted and engaging.
The Warping is a staple that encapsulates the album pretty well; Pearl has some of the Pulp influences I cannot help but notice while listening; Jocelyn is a close contestant for my top three as it is so sentimental, dramatic, and his vocals are so descriptive that build with the bridge… stunning. The Captain is another fun, electric staple on the album.
With a Lightning Strike - Genevieve Stokes
genres: Pop, Indie, singer-songwriter
One of the things that drew me to this album was how enchanting her voice is. Her tone is so consistently clear and beautiful, and it creates the haunting, pop atmosphere that builds this album.
Desert Eagle is the perfect opener that throws you into Stokes’ storm. It is hard picking some favorites but Amusing, Old Friend, and With a Lightning Strike are definitely up there. River was my first introduction to her and that led me to listen to Mean Guy. These two songs convinced me to listen to the album fully and I am so glad I did. Dreamer is another amazing song that leans more on the energetic side of the album and is an instant favorite.
This is one of those albums that the more I listen to it, the more I love it. I knew pretty early on that I would love it, but all the songs are pop perfection and it makes me excited to see what she does next.
as a side note, the album cover is so stunning and it must be acknowledged.
Hopefully one of these 2024 releases will sound appealing, as they are all so significantly different but equally amazing. It is fun keeping such a close eye on the latest releases as artistry becomes more accessible and we see some interesting personalities rising. 2024 is simply an amazing year for music and I can’t wait to see where these artists end up.
Extra:
“I Destroyed Disco” has been on loop for a couple of weeks now and I am terrified it will be on my top five this upcoming Spotify Wrapped.
