To reflect a little, this past year on Substack has taught me so much about music and writing. Every day, I find new tracks and continue to refine my taste while also appreciating music as an art form, not solely made for consumption, but with intention. While I do not understand what inner desire drove me to come back to Substack, I have too many updates to add to this music capsule worth noting (I am always open to recs, too). Some old, some new, some in Spanish, but they are all defining my taste lately.
Latest Addictions
Talkie Walkie by Air
The latest addition to this list yet a very important one. An insane electronic album that fulfills my itch for electronic music without overdoing it. Every track is smooth and engaging, and their accents make it fun to listen to.
Incredible album linked below for those curious on the vibe:
Out of Season by Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man
I have known Beth Gibbons, but I had never listened to this album before, and I am so upset I had been missing out on such an amazing experience. It is so remarkable how expressive she can be and how insightful her songs are. Just amazing.
Check out this song from it to see if you’re into it:
Some singles …
Back to me & Nobody New by The Marias: constantly on my rotation.
Babylon by Cola Boyy: PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS SONG.
How? by Love Spells: Soft, haunting, and beautiful.
Henry, come on by Lana del Rey: her new adventure into country music, yet still maintaining her sound and even building on it through maturity and expertise, is amazing to witness after being a fan for so long.
All I Ever Really Wanted by Jessica Winter: I sent this song to a friend and she really liked it, now it reminds me of her every time I listen to it.
Bullseye by Lucy Dacus and Hozier: While I am not a fan of either of them, this song is gorgeous and so emotional. It just made me feel, which I always appreciate
harvest sky by oklou: I forget if I talked about oklou on here or not, but the way her album has stayed relevant and might become a staple of the year for the indie listeners on twitter makes it worth noting.
Pill by Divorce: I am also hoping I am not repeating myself with this mention since Divorce has just stayed on my radar for so long and I hope they continue to do so throughout time.
Timing by Anna Haus: an indie artist with a great song on her hands. She just released an album, and because of this song, I will be listening and supporting her journey.
Heart of Gold by Fiona Apple: Apple’s brutal cover of the song just has to make it into this breakdown since she absolutely blew me away with this song.
TU ET MOI by Judeline: It is a latin, dance pop track that recently came out and it is so catchy. It scratches an itch for me that makes it addictive.
Super by Bb Trickz: of similar nature to the previous track, my sister showed me this song and I can play it on loop since it is so easy to listen to and clever.
VVV [Trippin’you]
Hear me out with this one. The name sounds horrifying, but its electronic latin music with hints of new wave and somber tones that are addicting and dark. In specific, their EP with Luz Futuro called “Colera / Mi Sangre” is what hooked me into their craft, and now I listen to other albums and singles that are just exhilarating and fun. If post-punk is something you’re into, then this might be attractive for you.
Morpheus
I love a good, sad European folk artist. Morpheus came to me after my Tamino obsession. His voice is full of soul and rasp, and it is entrancing. He deserves to get way more recognition with how insane his voice is in every track and the atmosphere he creates so seamlessly.
Henry Lee by PJ Harvey and Nick Cave
Reconnecting with this song spun me back into my addiction with Nick Cave’s music, this song, and PJ Harvey. The way they created an absolutely stunning collaboration and filmed the music video without any planning or rehearsing makes it that much more striking and emotional. This is one of the classic songs of my life and it comes back to me every few months.
The Beatles and Led Zeppelin
The dramatics of these two bands have put me through things these past few months. “Girl” never gets old; “Your Time Is Gonna Come” is just perfect at every edge; “If I Fell” is simply insane; I am a sucker for “I Can’t Quit You Baby”; “For No One” will never be skipped by me.
Similarly, Leonard Cohen’s “One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong” is constantly on my rotation again. Every few months, it comes back to haunt me, and I absolutely love it.
Also, Coldplay’s “Shiver.” That song. If you get it, you get it.
And, Radiohead’s “India Rubber” and “How Can You Be Sure?” I had never listened to these two tracks and they blew me away.
Live Shows
I got to see Rowena Wise and Tamino live in the past few months. Both were magical experiences, and if you want to read my concert review for Rowena’s show, I will link it below.
